Validating a Digital Probe

  • Updated

Before using a digital probe, you should check to see how accurate its readings will be. This can be done by using either of the following methods:

  • Using a Timed Cooling Log template with a single entry for 32°F.
  • Using a Reusable Checklist with a Digital Probe list item with a range of 30°F to 34°F degrees.

Your system administrator can arrange to have such a log or checklist created.

To validate a digital probe, carry out the following:

  1. Fill a 2-quart container with ice, preferably crushed, but cubed is okay.
  2. Pour water over the ice until it reaches about ½-inch from the top.
  3. In the Mobile App, start the Timed Log or Reusable List that your organization has designated for validating digital probes. For more information, see:
  4. Insert the probe into the ice water and constantly stir. The temperature will be visible in the Mobile App:

  5. After the temperature stabilizes, press the transmit button on the probe to record the temperature. The probe screen in the Mobile App closes and you can complete the log or checklist.

The ice water should have a temperature right around 32°F, +/- 0.1°F. A validated probe should have a reading between 30°F and 34°F.
